Beau Young Prince
Picture
There’s an inartistic and symbiotic relation between BYP and his city. A product of Southeast DC., Beau Young Prince has managed to amass millions of streams. Incredibly notice tv/movie placements and maybe most key to date, a Grammy nomination. His art is powerful and enigmatic combination of soul-infused groove, mixed with tightly wrapped melodies, and a knack for the crafting of wordplay reminiscent of a true songwriter. Having been featured in major tv and movie projects (“Broad City” “All American” the Grammy-nominated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and most recently “Coming 2 America.” The 2X Platinum BYP’s most valuable attribute is his live performance.  An unmatched energy and a bourgeoning, yet relatively extensive catalogue make for live shows that are truly fan-first experiences. While the rugged grind of D.C. could often stifle movement and creativity, BYP’s inculcation of how his hometown molded him offered a softness and a vulnerability to his music that lends itself to listeners of all walks. Whether it be high-energy NFL placement, records like “Move the Chains” or trap-blended crossover singles like “In Real Life” (w/ Young Nudy) by steadily offers a relatable and approachable nature to his music, one that guides you hand in hand with his life, process, trials and tribulations alike. After dropping his debut album, “Groovy Land” on Def Jam, he’s now branched out in a more executive capacity to form Half & Half Records, an endearing and savvy imprint that not only pays homage to a D.C. staple drink, but subtle ode to one of this biggest underground city hits. In the spirit of furthering his reach as an artist and branded business, he recently launched his cannabis venture. Aptly and fittingly titled, Half & Half. The brand epitomizes his love for cannabis culture, advocacy, and the relation to his D.C. roots. Dozen of shows, multiple nationwide tours, and an invitation to perform at the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, BYP manages a tricky juggling act of navigating the corporate side with a strict adherence to his art first and foremost. This is D.C.hustle, grind, carry-outs, go-go’s, soul, culture, reverence.  This is BYP

Chantilly "Cleva Thoughts" Kornegay.
Picture
My name is Chantilly "Cleva Thoughts" Kornegay. I was born January 20, 1985 in Bronx, NY to Gina and Russell. I was introduced to a wide variety of music like reggae, Latino, R-N-B, House, and jazz but hip hop influenced me at an early age. I could not stop reciting LL Cool J “Around the Way”. I was impressed with the be-boy dance moves, heavy chains, rap lyrics, fashion and just the overall culture. Walking down the street in New York City is so inspiring to new eyes and to thrive in its diversity is an experience in itself. When I was 10 my mother decided to uproot and move to Maryland with me, my stepfather and my 3 siblings. . I got introduced to my love for music when I was 13 I went away one summer to Massachusetts with my uncle and cousins. My Uncle was a musician that played Keyboard and the Bass guitar he traveled with a band. That summer I wrote my first 16 bars to one of his Jazzy instrumentals. It wouldn’t be until I was 15 or 16 when I got my first computer. I learned to record music and make beats.  I've performed in DC, MD, TX and NY. I've been in a magazine featuring Tech N9Ne as well as various underground radio stations including Rolling with Swanny River. I network and collaborate with artists from around the world including, London, Jamaica, Cali, and Africa. Over the past year and some change I have been in business providing songwriting services that cater to producers, artists, labels, podcasts, and various brands. The genres I write in are Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, Trap, EDM, and Dub-Step. I just graduated June 2019 from Strayer University with my Bachelor's degree in Information Technology.I chose to go to college because I want to make sure my daughter knows people have died for us to receive education and we should take advantage of the opportunity to better ourselves.

Sunday October 16
Moderator: Asia
Picture
Virginia Beach, Virginia native Asia Chandler grew up listening to Virginia radio and was inspired to pursue a career in broadcasting at a very young age. She spent many hours talking and singing into her hairbrush, and then at the tender age of 9, she received the best gift ever. It was a toy from Radio Shack, that allowed her to talk over AM stations, and that was it. As she grew up, her passion for radio grew even more intense and she chose to study Communications and Journalism in college.

Asia later moved to Boston Massachusetts, where she attended Northeastern University and got her feet wet at the student-run station 104.9 WRBB. After graduating with honors and dual degrees (Bachelor of Art in Journalism and a Bachelor of Art in Communication), Asia tried to pursue a career in radio and television but could not find a job in her field. Until one day in 2001, a radio station popped up, that no one knew about. She heard an announcement that they were looking for fresh new voices for the station. She agreed to accompany a friend who wanted to audition, and she found herself in line with more than 3,000 people. Convinced by her friend to audition, Asia finally agreed to go for the position and for days anxiously waited to receive the results. When the results were in, Asia was one of the finalists and she got her very first start at Radio One in Boston.

She spent several years with Radio One at WBOT, Hot 97.7 serving as the “Heat Wave” evening host, the “Hot Spot” Entertainment Reporter and the Afternoon Mid-Day host until landing a full-time on-air position with Citadel on Hot 106 in Providence. Everything came full circle when she started her dream job hosting mornings at WBCG on Big City 101.3 in October 2007. She won “The Best of Boston Award” for four consecutive years, The Urban Music Award for Best Radio Personality for four consecutive years, the Garrison Awards and other local accolades proving that her talent was as great as her passion. However, after four years of success on Morning Mayhem, unfortunately the station was sold and changed formats. It was then that Asia decided to make a change.

Asia relocated to the Washington, D.C . area in 2011 as a freelance Entertainment Reporter. In August of 2015, she returned to her Radio One home where it all started. In just months Asia was promoted from one weekend shift, to two shifts and two different stations within the Radio One family. Shortly after that time, Asia received an even bigger opportunity, and landed the Entertainment Reporter position on the “Donnie Simpson Show” with a segment called “Can We Talk?” She can now be heard Saturday’s from 3-7 p.m. on “Afternoons with Asia.” In May of 2017, Asia accepted a new opportunity to host her own show on Magic 95.9 FM Baltimore Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to midnight on “After Hours with Asia.”

Edley Shine
Picture
As One Half Of the Duo Born Jamericans Edley Shine made an impenetrable mark on the Hip-hop/Reggae Landscape with the Classic Albums Kids From Foreign & Yardcore. With His Distinct voice and ear for melodies the humble artist from Washington DC with #DABIGVOICE has returned to seal his legacy for generations to come. Ealey Shine has returned with what he helms as a dissertation of sorts on his unspoken skills as an individual artist.

Shine’s new project Based on Talent is 6 Songs of him shedding his past gruff voiced beast cadence to show a full beautiful arsenal of vocal range and penmanship. Edley says that he purposely used only songs he had written with no features and production from Roe Summerz producer/engineer for (Koffee, Tommy Lee, Ding Dong & Irish Hill Records) and new comer Riddim Boss producer for (Vybz Kartel, Island Wav Records).

Using these components Edley was able to dig deep and craft a sound he has been in search of since 1998. Songs like Big Mon Ting which is an anthem on how growing into maturity and starting a family changes the way your friends may perceive your new perspective. On Cyann Recova Shine is in full 90’s form with a girls anthem that takes us back to the time when the riddims were heavy and the lyrics where clean yet still potent. Factory Skin finds Edley in a sing jay stance addressing the Natural Beauty of woman that has been lost to the social media culture of the day. He wants the ladies to listen to the words of this song carefully and overstand that natural is always better.

There is also the first single and video Babylon Breeze (meaning man made air) which is sure to resignate with Edley Shine’s core fan base. The video was shot on a rainy day in the hills of St. Elizabeth Jamaica were Edley declares he is content as an elder statesman in the game and gives gems to younger artist over a heavy boom-bap bass driven beat on the state of the culture.

Glow Party taps into the vibrations of today’s new sounds and finds Edley Shine giving you his twist with an afrobeat’s/dancehall vibe. Ending this opus is Park Up which Edley Shine says is a personal letter to those whom it may apply. Its evident Shines will never find himself stuck in place or on the shelf that others may think he was placed and it shows as this beautiful riddim accompanies the fluid lyrics on this closing track. Edley Shine is currently working with several reggae/rock bands with producers Jungle Josh & Dave Foral of (Dirty Heads). He was featured on The Orlando based Kash’d Out new album UnderCover on a song entitled Weed Man. He was also invited on stage at the DC stop of reggae/rock collective Pepper Stop the Local Motion Tour.

DJ Heat
Picture
The nation’s capitol has a hometown hero that spins, scratches and blends music while staunchly staying true to her roots. You can’t mute D.C. and you can’t mute DJ Heat. This skilled talent was just 13-years-old when she first discovered her interest in turntables courtesy of a Wreckx-N-Effect classic. She then went from fantasizing about spinning records to the real thing. An indelible spark was lit and a summer of saved paychecks led to her ultimately following her path and pursuing her passion. That small spark created a full- on flame, and DJ Heat took purposeful steps to align herself with her dream.

In addition to rocking turntables, DJ Heat is an adept on-air personality with years of expertise. First there were classes at her high school’s radio program, then studying at Morgan State University that spurned into an internship at WPGC 95.5 An intentional, not coincidental experience, the position put her alongside Big Tigger at a station bursting with talent. A chance recommendation from a fellow radio colleague lead to a full-time on-air position and DJ Heat later accumulated experience at Hot 97, Shade 45 and Baltimore’s 92.3 WERQ where she currently spins as a mix show DJ. She doesn’t just pride herself on a lengthy musically laced career; the disc jockey revels in providing experiences. She often does so onstage while DJing for Grammy winning songstress Mya and while DJing for Grammy nominated songstress Carolyn Malachi, respectively. “I just love giving people a great experience and seeing people’s reaction,” says Heat. I’m spending hours on YouTube, on playlists, updating my arsenal. I might be at the same event but I want to give people a unique experience every time. When you see a crowd react to a certain sound or a blend, it’s just a rush—music is my drug.”

It’s not lost on DJ Heat that there’s been a cultural shift when it comes to the music scene in the Nation’s capital. With her tenure spanning decades, she’s seen it grow and ultimately blossom but one thing that has never changed is the true grit of her hometown. She proudly carries that with her as D.C. continues its plight against being diluted and silenced.

“When it comes to the natives of D.C. we are persistent, one thing is we’re going to make it known about our culture, we want to preserve our culture so much,” says Heat. “You saw #DontMuteDC, those are the D.C. natives I know. We want to stand tall; we don’t want to be erased. Come in but respect us, that’s the true thing that describes the people of D.C. “

What’s also true is DJ Heat’s current position as the official DJ for the WNBA Champion Washington Mystics and the NBA’s Washington Wizards. Neither position occurred by happenstance and when the stars artfully aligned this sonic savant went from working as a Mystics ball girl to entertaining the crowd at Capital One Arena 20 years after her first gig. There couldn’t be a better fit for a true Washington D.C. sports fan. “It’s mind blowing especially to have it happen this late in life, you never know where life can take you,” says Heat.

While continuing to bask in her full circle moment with the pro teams, Heat’s staying intentionally full with musically related endeavors. She’s continuing her “The Rap Up Show” podcast and “My First Album” web series whilst promoting her new single “City Girl’” featuring Styme & Reece P. There’s still much to come for this true talent who masterfully mixes aptness and art, she’s only scratched the surface. You can’t mute D.C. and you can’t mute DJ Heat.
